What are the best things to do in Warragul, Victoria?

The best things to do in Warragul, West Gippsland, include the Brandy Creek Winery, Warragul Country Club and Mount Worth State Park.

Warragul is one of those Australian hub towns that is perfectly pleasant but doesn’t really command the attention of many overseas tourists.

Warragul is the administrative centre of the West Gippsland region in Victoria. The Melbourne to Warragul drive is 105km long, meaning a Melbourne to Warragul driving time of around one hour and 17 minutes. Chances are you’ll pass through on the Princes Highway if driving from Sydney to Melbourne along the coastal route.

Things to do in Warragul: Parks and Arts Centre

Things to do in Warragul if you’re passing through are largely confined to parks and wineries.

Civic Park, Brooker Park and Burke Street Park are all pleasant enough to while away a sunny hour or so with a picnic or a book. The West Gippsland Arts Centre, which hosts a decent array of multi genre concerts, is just to the south of Civic Park.

You’ll probably have more fun wine tasting at the Wild Dog Winery or Brandy Creek Estate, however.

Warragul wineries

The Wild Dog Winery is 3km south of Warragul, and has been making wines since 1982. Varietals produced include semillon, viognier, pinot noir and cabernet franc. Also on site are a boardwalk, walking trails and bush tucker gardens.

The Brandy Creek Estate is just to the north of Warragul and neighbouring town Drouin. It’s a much bigger affair – the Brandy Creek winery has a Spanish-style tapas restaurant and a day spa. Wines produced there include a Tempranillo and Sparkling Pinot Gris.

Topping the list of other things to do in Warragul is the Warragul Country Club – a decent spot for a drink and a round of golf.

Mount Worth State Park

There are a few green spaces with walking trails nearby. The Mount Worth State Park to the south has longer trails and more options than the Crossover Regional Park and Sweetwater Creek Nature Conservation Reserve to the north-east.

It’s possible to get to Warragul by train. The town is on the Bairnsdale V/Line service from Melbourne, which also passes through Pakenham, Drouin, Yarragon, Traralgon, Moe and Sale. The drive to Traralgon also passes through Warragul.

But you kinda need a car for the Warragul wineries and Mount Worth State Park. And if that’s the case, you might be better off staying 39km to the north in Noojee. There you’ve got easier access to the Noojee Trestle Bridge Rail Trail and Toorongo Falls. Due to the Warragul weather being at its best then, March and April are the best time to visit the West Gippsland region.

The drive from Warragul to Traralgon takes about 42 minutes.
