Whyalla weather: When is the best time to visit the Eyre Peninsula?

Whyalla weather: When is the best time to visit the Eyre Peninsula?

The Whyalla weather is ferociously hot in January and February. So avoid the summer. The best time to visit the Eyre Peninsula is arguably April or October.

South Australia’s Eyre Peninsula is one of the great underrated tourist destinations in Australia. The triangular peninsula across the Spencer Gulf from Adelaide offers Coffin Bay oysters straight from the oyster sheds, swimming with Australian sea lions at Baird Bay and great white shark cage dives from Port Lincoln.

But it can get pretty darned hot on the Eyre Peninsula, as one look at the Whyalla weather data will tell you.

Whyalla is the biggest town on the Eyre Peninsula, about a third of the way down from Port Augusta to Port Lincoln. It’s an industrial city, with the most notable attraction being the Whyalla steelworks tours.

But the Whyalla weather is a decent rule of thumb guide for the rest of the Eyre Peninsula. If the Whyalla weather is unpleasantly hot, then chances are it’s not going to be particularly delightful in Kimba, the Coffin Bay National Park or spotting koalas at Mikkira Station.

Best time to visit the Eyre Peninsula

The Whyalla weather is at its fiercest in January and February. According to the Bureau of Meteorology, the mean maximum daily temperature in January is 30.2°C. And that means some January days on the Eyre Peninsula are considerably hotter than that.

The coldest month in Whyalla is July, with a mean maximum daily temperature of 17°C. That’s obviously much easier to handle. But given that many of the best things to do on the Eyre Peninsula involve getting in the Southern Ocean, you might want the Whyalla weather to be a little warmer than that. April and October, with mean daily maximum temperatures of 24°C, are pretty much perfect.

Don’t worry too much about rainfall. Even the rainiest month on the Eyre Peninsula, June, sees just 27.9mm of rain in Whyalla.
