How to find the cheapest campervan rentals in Australia

For the cheapest campervan rentals in Australia, search with a specialist site and be prepared to hire your campervan from smaller, local firms.

Hiring a campervan can end up being the most cost-effective way to travel around Australia. But to get the cheapest deals on Australia campervan rentals, you have to know where to look.

There are several big name campervan chains in Australia, including Britz, Maui and Apollo Campers. However, if you’re on a budget, these firms are likely to prove prohibitively expensive.

Australian campervan rental price quotes

Doing a dummy booking five months ahead of travel, Australia Travel Questions looked at the cost of a month’s campervan hire, picking up and dropping off in Sydney.

Going direct with Britz, the price for the cheapest two berth campervan was $4687. That works out at $161.64 per day. For a four berth model, the cheapest option was $4,965. That’s $171.23 per day.

Quite frankly, ouch.

How to find cheaper campervan rentals in Australia

Going direct when looking at campervan prices in Australia, however, is a mug’s game. You’re far better off going to a comparison site and trawling through the options.

Unfortunately, the usual car rental comparison sites are useless when it comes to campervans and motorhomes. You need to try a specialist.

Campervan hire from smaller firms

In Australia, the most useful specialist campervan hire comparison site is Drivenow. This is partly because it has a focused section concentrating on campervan hire, but also because it sources deals from lesser-known rental firms.

Often these smaller, local firms offer considerably cheaper deals. The vans might not be as plush, but that’s the trade-off if you’re looking for lower prices.

For example, using the same dates as the previous search, Australia Travel Questions found a two person campervan for $2,457 a month. That’s a much more palatable $84.73 per day.

For a four person campervan, the cheapest option cost $3,511 for a month. That’s $121.10 per day.

These are obviously big differences in price – and searching in the right place could make all the difference between an Australian camper van rental being affordable or over budget.
