Trains in Victoria, Australia

It is possible to get around Victoria, Australia, by train – but don’t expect to get a train to the coast.

Of all the states in Australia, Victoria is arguably the best set up for exploring by rail. In New South Wales and Queensland, services beyond the coast are pretty thin on the ground. But in Victoria, Melbourne is handily positioned as a central hub, with services spreading in most directions on a series of different lines.

The main problem is that the Victorian coast is not well served by trains. If you want to go to the Gippsland coast or Great Ocean Road, connections to buses are required.
