Crocodiles in Sydney Harbour?
There are no crocodiles in Sydney Harbour and you’re not going to encounter a croc at Bondi Beach. That’s because, while Sydney is usually delightfully warm for most visitors, it is too cold for crocs.
Saltwater crocodiles are cold-blooded creatures, and need to spend plenty of time basking in the sun for energy. Sydney’s winters are too chilly for them – and there are no crocodiles elsewhere in New South Wales either.
The same applies for most of Australia’s big cities. You’ll not find crocodiles in Melbourne, you’ll not find crocodiles in Brisbane and you’ll not find crocodiles in the Murray River.
Where do crocodiles live in Australia?
Crocodiles in Australia generally live in the tropical, coastal parts of Queensland, the Northern Territory and Western Australia. There are several spots where you can do crocodile-spotting tours in northern Australia. These include the Daintree River near Cairns, the Proserpine River near Airlie Beach and the Yellow Water billabong in Kakadu National Park.
That said, they have been known to venture south of the Tropic of Capricorn. Gladstone is the generally accepted southern point of crocodile range on the east coast, but there is plenty of evidence to suggest that crocs are moving south in search of new territory.
Crocodiles live in the Boyne River, near Tannum Sands and just south of Gladstone. But there have also been crocs pulled out of the Mary River, much further south near Maryborough.

If you do want to see crocodiles in Sydney, you’re going to have to visit a zoo or wildlife park. Wild Life Sydney Zoo is home to Rocky the croc. You can also see a crocodile at the Featherdale Wildlife Park in Doonside.
