Adelaide to Uluru road trip: Drive through the outback

It’s five hours and 40 minutes from Port Augusta to Coober Pedy. The best stops on the way are Woomera, where you can see missiles and learn about space exploration, and the Lake Hart salt lake.

Coober Pedy is perhaps the archetypal outback town. It’s so hot that most people live in underground houses. There are some spectacular show homes in caves, while it’s also possible to take tours of an opal mine.

Adelaide to Uluru drive: Northern Territory section

The Coober Pedy to Uluru leg of the Adelaide to Uluru road trip is the most gruelling. You’re looking at a driving time of around seven hours and 50 minutes, with virtually nothing to see along the way.

The photogenic Breakaways range just to the north of Coober Pedy is the highlight. Continuing up the Stuart Highway, the Adelaide to Uluru drive crosses from South Australia into the Northern Territory.

You peel off the Stuart Highway at the Erldunda Roadhouse. Here, the Lasseter Highway runs towards Yulara, the hub town for Uluru.
