Darwin to Kununurra drive: Victoria River and Timber Creek

It’s another 514km from Katherine to Kununurra. The first realistic road trip stop is the Victoria River Roadhouse, which has a couple of good walking tracks nearby. The 1.8km Nawulbinbin Walk from the Joe Creek picnic area and 2.4km Escarpment Lookout trail offer great views of the Victoria River cutting through the rugged landscape.

About halfway between Katherine and Kununurra, Timber Creek is the gateway to the 4WD-only Gregory National Park. The Gregory Tree – the first boab tree ever described by European explorers is a highlight amount the walking trails.

The Timber Creek Police Station Complex is also worth a look, and gives a sobering insight into the poor treatment of Aboriginal Australians.
