Melbourne to Darwin road trip stops: The Red Centre

Most people driving from Melbourne to Darwin are unlikely to go straight to Alice Springs from Coober Pedy. It’s far better to divert down the Lasseter Highway towards Uluru.

After the lengthy Coober Pedy to Uluru drive, you can explore the highlights of the Red Centre. These include the Uluru Base Walk and Kata-Tjuta, before driving from Uluru to Kings Canyon in Watarrka National Park. The Rim Walk here is tough but immensely satisfying.

Depending on which route you take from Kings Canyon to Alice Springs, you might also be able to fit in some of the highlights of the West MacDonnell Ranges, such as Ormiston Gorge, Standley Chasm and the Ellery Creek Big Hole.
