Mount Magnet to Perth drive: New Norcia and Chittering

Dalwallinu was set up by Benedictine monks from New Norcia, further south. New Norcia is Australia’s only monastic town, and it is a genuinely fascinating oddity, dotted with incongruously handsome Spanish architecture. The New Norcia Museum and Art Gallery tells the backstory, including the settlement’s darker side as an Aboriginal mission.

From New Norcia, continue along the Chittering, where you’ll switch from the Great Northern Highway to the Tonkin Highway. You can also stop to admire the wildflowers along the 1.5km Djidi-Djidi Ridge walking trail.
