Newman to Perth road trip: Wubin to Dalwallinu

Small pastoral town Wubin is a more realistic stop. The Wheatbin Museum looks at the local grain industry, while this is one of the best spots in the country for wildflowers in August and September.

The distance from Wubin to Dalwallinu is 20km. Dalwallinu is the regional hub.

Here, the Dalwallinu Discovery Centre covers local history and the wheat industry, while wildflowers bloom in the Dalwallinu Remnant Bushland.

The Old Convent offers surprisingly gorgeous accommodation.

Newman to Perth drive: New Norcia and Chittering

Dalwallinu was founed by Benedictine monks from New Norcia, further south. New Norcia is Australia’s only monastic town, and it is sprinkled with incongruously stylish Spanish architecture. The New Norcia Museum and Art Gallery tells the story of the settlement – including the dark period as an Aboriginal mission.

You leave the Great Northern Highway for the Tonkin Highway at Chittering. There’s more fabulous wildlife viewing to be had here at the Djidi-Djidi Ridge walking trail.
