Camping in Murray Sunset National Park: What are the accommodation options?

Free camping in Murray Sunset National Park, Victoria, is possible at eleven campgrounds. These include one next to the Lake Crosbie pink lake. Murray Sunset National Park accommodation is also available, cottage-style, at the Shearers Quarters.

Murray Sunset National Park is the largest national park in Victoria. It’s best tackled as a day tour from the Victorian city of Mildura, but accommodation options are available should you wish to stay inside the park boundaries. Don’t expect glamour, though – camping in Murray Sunset National Park is the main way to stay there, and it is basic accommodation.

Murray Sunset National Park camping

There are eleven campsites within Murray Sunset National Park. Only the Lake Becking and Lake Crosbie campgrounds are accessible by two wheel drive. Lake Crosbie – one of the Murray Sunset National Park’s pink lakes – is one of the major attractions in this north-eastern corner of Victoria. The nearest town to Lake Crosbie is Ouyen.

Your Mildura checklist

The other Murray Sunset National Park campgrounds – including those at Pheenys Track, Mopoke Hut, Rocket Lake, Mt Crozier and Shearers Quarters – require a 4WD vehicle.

Camping is free, but very basic. Four of the eleven sites don’t have toilet facilities. These are Border, Mt Crozier Remote, Sunset Track and Henschke Track. The others at least have picnic tables and fire pits

Camping in Murray Sunset National Park requires a strong level of self-sustainability. Drinking water and bins are not provided – campers must bring all required water in with them, and take all rubbish out. All of these sites will be uncomfortable in summer – the Mildura weather gets very hot in January and February.

More Murray Sunset National Park accommodation

The other Murray Sunset National Park accommodation option is staying at the Shearers Quarters. This historic, self-contained cottage is hardly the Ritz, but it is a step up from camping. There’s a very limited supply of non-drinking water, plus a gas fridge and a bathroom with a hot shower. Four rooms have availability and bookings can be made online.

A night’s stay at the Shearers Quarters costs $106.60 for a room or $418.50 for whole house. Don’t expect too many creature comforts, though – you need to bring bed linen, firewood and cooking equipment in with you.

The surrounding Shearers Quarters campground has a fire pit and picnic tables. There are only three sites, however, all unpowered.

Sunset Nature Walk from Shearers Quarters

The 3.5km Sunset Nature Walk starts at the camping area. For spotting birdlife, including the endangered malleefowl, take the stroll. Lizard lovers should keep an eye open for bearded dragons and mallee dragons. Signage along the way gives information about Murray Sunset National Park’s flora, fauna and farming history.

Camping is also an option in the neighbouring Hattah-Kulkyne National Park, but that’s best visited on a Hattah Lakes tour from Mildura. Murray Sunset National Park is a good inclusion on the Mildura to Adelaide leg of a Murray River road trip.
