Fraser Island accommodation: Kingfisher Bay Resort vs Eurong Beach Resort

Fraser Island accommodation: Kingfisher Bay Resort vs Eurong Beach Resort

The Kingfisher Bay Resort is easily the most impressive and luxurious Fraser Island accommodation. But the Eurong Beach Resort on 75 Mile Beach is decent, cheaper and arguably better located.

Fraser Island accommodation for many is all about camping. But there are two main resorts on Queensland’s top adventure island for those not taking a backpacker tag-along tour.

Fraser Island accommodation: Kingfisher Bay Resort

The two main Fraser Island accommodation options are the Kingfisher Bay Resort and the Eurong Beach Resort. Of these, the Kingfisher Bay Resort is the plush option. There’s a mix of hotel rooms – all of which have their own private balconies – and villas. These are spacious, and come with a full kitchen and laundry.

The Kingfisher Bay Resort’s on-site Seabelle restaurant is superb, with an admirable dedication to using indigenous Australian ingredients such as lemon myrtle, pepperberry, wild lime, and paperbark-wrapped barramundi fish. There’s also a surprisingly large freeform pool, but the real charm is in how the Kingfisher Bay Resort embraces the island. It’s designed to fit in unobtrusively, and offers a series of experiences – from ranger guided canoe paddles and bush walks to native food tastings – that can seriously enhance the stay. The K’Gari World Heritage Discovery Centre is here, too.

The Kingfisher Bay Resort is also where the Fraser Island ferry from River Heads near Hervey Bay arrives.

Low season prices can drop to about $180, but they’re usually considerably more expensive than that. For more information, visit the Kingfisher Bay Resort website.

Fraser Island accommodation: Eurong Beach Resort

The solid three star option is the Eurong Beach Resort (eurong.com.au) on the other side of Fraser Island/ K’gari. Rooms are relatively simple affairs – with ceiling fans rather than air conditioning at the cheaper end of the scale. But the island’s shops are here. As are the beach bar, coffee shop and bakery. The facilities are strong for from $155 a night, though. Two pools, a tennis court, fishing gear hire and a barbecue areas are part of the deal.

The Eurong Beach Resort is also on 75 Mile Beach, the main highway on the world’s largest sand island. If you’re self-driving rather than taking tours, this makes it considerably easier to get to tourist highlights such as Eli Creek, the Maheno Shipwreck and Lake Mackenzie.
