Hotels near Sydney Lyric Theatre
The best hotel near Sydney Lyric Theatre is the Darling at the Star. But that’s very expensive, so consider pub accommodation at the Terminus Pyrmont and Dunkirk Hotel, or the solid Aiden by Best Western Darling Harbour.
The Sydney Lyric Theatre is one of the best performance venues in Australia. But if you’re planning to catch a show there, perhaps as a Mother’s Day present, it pays to pick the right accommodation.
The key thing to realise is that the Sydney Lyric Theatre is not in Sydney CBD. It’s in Pyrmont on the other side of Darling Harbour, and part of the Star casino complex. That’s a 20 minute walk away from Pitt Street Mall or 32 minute walk from Circular Quay.
Frankly, you might not feel like that sort of schlep after watching a musical, so it’s worth looking into Pyrmont hotels that are much closer.

Hotels near Sydney Lyric Theatre: Darling at the Star
The obvious option for a hotel near Sydney Lyric Theatre is the Darling at the Star, which is also within the Star Casino complex. It’s an impressively stylish place, with a pool and 35 square metre standard rooms. As a splash-out it’s a lovely place to stay, but let’s not pretend it’s a bargain. When Australia Travel Questions made a dummy booking for a low season stay, the quoted rate was $412 per night.
Hotels near Sydney Lyric Theatre: Terminus Pyrmont
However, there are other hotels near Sydney Lyric Theatre. The Terminus Pyrmont is an old pub with nine guest rooms. They’re surprisingly nice, too – there’s been a recent refurbishment and the rooms have plenty of colour and pep about them. However, only two of the nine have en-suite bathroom facilities, so don’t go expecting particularly high comfort levels. Rates at the Terminus Pyrmont start at $159 a night for the rooms with a shared bathroom or $179 a night for an en-suite.
Pyrmont accommodation: The Dunkirk Hotel
The Dunkirk Hotel does a similar line in boutique-leaning rooms in a historic pub, and again most have a shared bathroom. There’s a crisp monochrome theme, and you’ll pay from $139 for a double with a shared bathroom, or $159 for an ensuite.
If you want a hotel near Sydney Lyric Theatre, but don’t want five star prices or a room above a pub, you’re realistically looking the chain hotels on the Pyrmont side of Darling Harbour.
Pyrmont hotels: Aiden by Best Western and Ibis Darling Harbour
The Aiden by Best Western Darling Harbour and Ibis Darling Harbour both fall into the perfectly decent but utterly unremarkable category. The Aiden by Best Western is nearer to the Lyric Theatre, slightly nicer and usually a bit cheaper. On the dummy booking check, the Aiden cost $224 and the rate at the Ibis Darling Harbour was $269.
The other option is to look for holiday homes and short term rentals, but Pyrmont isn’t a bumper area for these.
