Unusual accommodation in Fremantle: The Hougoumont Hotel

The Hougoumont Hotel is named after the last convict ship to arrive in Australia, and the names of those on board are written on the walls. The rooms are playfully cabin-like, with wood-panelled walls, clever space-creating shelving and a curving, frosted-glass wall separating off the surprisingly marble-packed bathroom.

These cabin-like rooms are actually cleverly-converted shipping containers.

Take advantage of the freebies, including fruit and bottles of water in reception, and the complimentary wine and cheese hour between 5pm and 6pm.

Rooms at the Hougoumont Hotel in Fremantle cost from around $175. Book here.

Unusual accommodation in Fremantle: Fremantle Prison YHA

Fremantle Prison YHA offers up rooms inside the former cells and guard cottages of the World Heritage-listed Fremantle Prison. This 1850s, convict-built prison is the most impressive historic attraction in Perth, and being able to stay there is an appealing gimmick.

The Fremantle Prison YHA is primarily dorm accommodation aimed at backpackers, but has doubles with private bathrooms too.

Sleeping quarters are split between the former cells of the women’s wing, the Victorian-era guards cottages and a purpose-built modern building tacked on the back. The history is nicely embraced – corridors are lined with displays telling tales of former prisoners and escapees. The kitchen is in the old cookhouse, while the former exercise yard is now a lawn regularly commandeered by sunbathers. Dorm beds and ensuite doubles cost from $29 and $144 respectively. Book here.
