Jetpack flying in Penrith

The main problem for visitors wanting to give it a go is that these jetpack adventures take place at the International Regatta Centre on Penrith Lakes. This is about as far west as you can go in Sydney before you cross the Nepean River and hit the Blue Mountains. Getting there is a bit of a slog.

The International Regatta Centre in the suburb of Cranebrook is 60km north-west of Sydney Central station. Getting there via the fastest route – the M4 toll road – in light traffic should take just under an hour. You’ll want a hire car, too – getting to the International Regatta Centre by public transport is massively inconvenient. You’re better off hiring a car to see the Blue Mountains, taking a couple of days exploring the Jenolan Caves, Katoomba walking trails and kangaroo-inhabited campgrounds, then swinging by Penrith on the way back to the city. The Sydney Olympic Stadium and Featherdale Wildlife Park in Doonside can be visited on the way.

How jetpack flying works at Penrith Lakes, Sydney

When you get there, flying with jetpacks isn’t quite as you would have imagined it from watching the Jetsons. But it’s as good as an approximation as we’re going to get for now. The packs work by firing water out of the back at high speed.

You’re connected to a pump in the lake you’re flying over, which sends water up via a tube. Then the rocket boosters at the back of the jetpack fire the water back out. The ferocity of the water ejection sends you flying – it’s essentially the law of recoil in action.

The fun comes in trying to control the thing. A careful has to be struck between height and forward motion.
