Ningaloo Reef humpback whale season

The official humpback whale swimming season comes at the end of whale shark season. It runs from the start of August to the end of November, but sightings get patchier towards the end of that period. It also gets much hotter, and there are fewer tourists around, so the chances of the tour being cancelled are considerably higher.

Aim for August or September if you want to swim with humpback whales on the Ningaloo Reef. Tours run from the Western Australian town of Exmouth, which is a two hour flight or a long old drive up from Perth. For the rest of the year, there are always Ningaloo Reef kayaking tours and microlight flights.
