The Ballandean Pyramid is an unusual Granite Belt landmark in southern Queensland. Near the village of Ballandean, the 17.5 metre-high pyramid is on private land, with climbing not permitted.

What is the Ballandean Pyramid?

The Ballandean Pyramid is a man-made pyramid in Ballandean, Queensland. It was created in 2006, when a local landowner decided he had far too much granite on his property.

Therefore, a contractor with an excavator and dump truck was hired to create a local landmark. The process of building the Ballandean Pyramid took eight months.

How big is the Ballandean Pyramid

The height of the Ballandean Pyramid is 17.5 metres, and its base covers 30 square metres. It was made with 7,500 tonnes of rock.

Where is the Ballandean Pyramid?

The Ballandean Pyramid is to the south of Ballandean, Queensland, and Girraween National Park acts as a backdrop. To get close, branch off the New England Highway down Jacobsens Road. Follow the road for 1.7km and the pyramid will be on your right.

You’ll go past on the Tenterfield to Stanthorpe leg of the Tamworth to Brisbane drive.

Can I climb the Ballandean Pyramid?

Alas, it is not possible to climb the Ballandean Pyramid. In fact, it’s not even possible to stand right next to it. The Ballandean Pyramid is on private property and the closest ordinary visitors can get is taking a photo from the roadside.

However, the Ballandean Pyramid is only about 25 metres away from the roadside – you can still pull over and get a good picture of this unusual Granite Belt landmark.
