When is wet season in Sydney?

The wettest month in Sydney is June – but the city is too far south of the tropics for Sydney to have a genuine wet season.

Australia’s weather patterns vary significantly depending on what part of the country you’re in. The tropical north of the country and more temperate south feel very different. And the split between wet season and dry season only really applies to the tropical north.

Does Sydney have a wet season?

Sydney can get hot and humid, but it is way south of the tropics. The Sydney weather is closer to Mediterranean than tropical. Sydney doesn’t have a wet season.

The capital city of New South Wales does, however, have some months that see considerably more rain than others.

Rainiest month in Sydney

According to the Australian Government’s Bureau of Meteorology’s historical data, the wettest month in Sydney is June. The monthly climate statistics show that Sydney gets an average of 133.1mm of rain in June. Notably, though, there isn’t a dramatic variation in rainfall throughout the year.

Sydney gets an average of more than 100mm of rain every month for the first six months of the year. If we’re classing any part of the year as Sydney’s wet season, then it’s January to June.

The second half of the year is drier, however, and September is the driest month, with an average of 68.1mm of rain.

How many days of rain does Sydney get per month?

These differences in rainfall, as you can see, are not huge. Every month, Sydney will get between seven and ten days of rainfall (classed as a day when a millimetre of rain will fall).

So if you’re planning to go to one of Sydney’s beaches, take a Sydney Harbour cruise or tackle the Bondi to Coogee walk, it’s not quite a lottery as to whether it will rain. But it’s not far off being one.
