Mismatch Brewing, South Australia: Why visit this Adelaide Hills brewery?

Mismatch Brewing in the Adelaide Hills makes some interesting beers – notably the Strawberry Sour. But its location in the collaborative Lot 100 makes it really worth visiting.

Mismatch Brewing is among hundreds of small craft breweries attempting to change perceptions of Australian beer. Go back 20 years ago, and Australian pub taps were full of fairly interchangeable mass-market beers such as Toohey’s New, VB and Carlton Draught.

Times have changed, mercifully, and you can now get fabulous beers across Australia. And if you can taste them at source, even better.

Mismatch Brewing beers

Mismatch Brewing in the Adelaide Hills near Adelaide in South Australia is a case in point. There are four beers in Mismatch Brewing’s core range, with the 4.5% German-style lager being the standard-bearer. The 4.0% Session Ale is made for afternoon drinking – this summer ale is an easy-drinking affair. The 5.0% Pale Ale, meanwhile, packs a bit more punch. But flavour is key rather than power – the brewers have deliberately created a balance between malts and hops.

For something rather different, however, try the 3.0% Strawberry Sour. This is made using strawberries grown on the premises.

Mismatch Brewing at Lot 100

And it’s those premises that make Mismatch Brewing truly worth visiting. This Adelaide Hills Brewery is based at Lot 100, a collaborative venue in Hay Valley, just north of Nairne. This works almost like a food hall, but for local food and drink businesses. The Lot 100 restaurant hogs the limelight somewhat, but there’s also a winemaker, cidermaker, distiller and fruit juice producer. As a one stop shop for tasting what the Adelaide Hills has to offer, it’s extremely impressive.
