Where is the America Bay track?
The trailhead for the America Bay track is off West Head Road in Ku-Ring-Gai Chase Park, northern Sydney. The 1.8km return walk leads to America Bay, which is on Cowan Creek. The creek branches off the Hawkesbury River near the point where it joins Broken Bay.
The walk takes between one and two hours to complete, depending on where you stop along the way.
Why walk the America Bay track?
The trail winds its way through the scribbly gum and bloodwood bushland, and a short detour will take you to a handful of Aboriginal rock carvings.
The walk is moderately difficult and follows a small creek towards the America Bay lookout. This is a rock platform overlooking the boats on America Bay and Cowan Creek. This lookout makes for an excellent picnic spot, and there is also a small waterfall toppling over the escarpment.
Ku-Ring-Gai Chase National Park walks
The America Bay track is one of several walking routes in Ku-Ring-Gai Chase National Park. Another favourite is the Aboriginal Heritage Walk from the West Head Lookout car park. This takes in the Red Hands Cave Aboriginal rock art site, then loops back along the coast via Resolute Beach and West Head Beach.
