Boodjamulla National Park, QLD: Walking and swimming at Lawn Hill Gorge

Lawn Hill Gorge in Boodjamulla National Park, Queensland, offers several walking tracks and swimming at Indarri Falls.

Boodjamulla National Park is an outback national park in the far north-west of Queensland.

It is very much off the tourist radar, partly because it takes such a long detour to get there. It’s a long drive north of Camooweal, and a long drive south-west of Burketown, and not really on the way to anywhere else.

How to get to Boodjamulla National Park

Still, if you do fancy visiting Boodjamulla National Park, Queensland Parks and Forests has detailed driving instructions. Despite the remote location, it is possible to get there in a conventional vehicle.

Boodjamulla National Park was formerly known as Lawn Hill National Park, and the main attraction in Lawn Hill Gorge. This green oasis teems with wildlife, and is a good spot for canoeing and kayaking.

Lawn Hill Gorge walks and swimming at Indarri Falls

There are seven walking trails around Lawn Hill Gorge, the easiest of which is the 1.6km return Botanical Walk. This passes through a variety of different vegetation, and should take an hour at most.

At the other end of the scale is the Upper Gorge Track, which is challenging, but offers great views of the Upper and Middle gorges. You can also have a swim in the pool at the bottom of Indarri Falls as a reward. This is a 3.6km one way walk.

Elsewhere, the 2.6km return Island Stack Walk gives good views of Middle Gorge, and the Indarri Falls Track is a 2.5km circuit. This follows the sandstone rim of the gorge, before offering up that seductive swimming opportunity.

If you really want to spend some quality time in the Lawn Hill Gorge section of Boodjamulla National Park, then several of these walking trails are linkable together.
