What to book in 1770/ Agnes Water before you arrive

How to get to Bustard Head Lighthouse

The only way to get to Bustard Head Lighthouse by land is along a very rough 4WD track. The lighthouse is also on an island, so you need to wait for low tide before crossing onto Middle Island.

Essentially, all but the most enthusiastic 4WDers can forget about visiting Bustard Head Lighthouse.

Can I go inside Bustard Head Lighthouse?

It is possible to go inside Bustard Head Lighthouse, but only as part of an organised tour. So if you turn up in your 4WD, you’re not getting in.

The tours in question are the Larc amphibious vehicle full day tours from 1770/ Agnes Water. These tours take place in a strange ex-military vehicle that works as a 4WD bus on land and a boat on water.

The Larc 1770 tours promise plenty of native wildlife on the way to Bustard Head and, perhaps more importantly, include a guide tour of the Bustard Head Lighthouse once you arrive.

Five reasons why a day tour to Lady Musgrave Island should top your wish list

A Lady Musgrave Island day trip is usually the highlight of a visit to 1770/ Agnes Water. Here’s why it’s so special.

  • The Great Barrier Reef is in excellent condition here – it hasn’t received the bleaching damage that other spots further north have.
  • This is stinger and crocodile-free territory – perfect for a summer trip.
  • Lady Musgrave has the only navigable lagoon on the Great Barrier Reef – the water colours are extraordinary.
  • That lagoon makes the water really, really calm for swimming and snorkelling.
  • You’re almost certainly going to see turtles.
