Barcaldine to Charters Towers drive: Distance, time & best stops

Forest Den National Park and Moorrinya National Park

The next stop of any real note is Forest Den National Park, which is more of interest to birdwatchers than anyone else. There are several waterholes, and river channels lined with river red gums. Camping is possible by Four Mile Waterhole, but you’ll need a 4WD vehicle to get there.

Moorrinya National Park, further north, is a former sheep station. It’s a great place for seeing native wildlife – particularly kangaroos and wedge-tailed eagles. The 200 metre Bullock Creek Walk is good for spotting birds and you can camp at the Shirley Shearing Shed camping area.

You’ll reach the Flinders Highway at Torrens Creek, which is centred around the Exchange Hotel. Stop here for petrol, food and, if necessary, accommodation.
