Bourke to Broken Hill road trip: Cobar to Wilcannia

From Cobar to Broken Hill, it’s a 457km drive along the Barrier Highway. On the way out of Cobar, you can visit the Aboriginal rock art at Mount Grenfell National Park. A 4km circuit track takes you to the mountain summit via several rock art sites.

Wilcannia is the biggest town between Cobar and Broken Hill, but it’s a bit of a desolate place.

Still, there are a few heritage buildings to admire, and the Queens Head Hotel has been turned into an art gallery.

Wilcannia is where you break off north for mining town White Cliffs. Here you can tour the Red Earth opal mine, sleep in the Underground Motel and explore the Paroo-Darling National Park.

You can also turn off south-west towards Menindee, the Menindee Lakes and Kinchega National Park.
