Cobar to Broken Hill drive via White Cliffs

Aside from Wilcannia, the main stops on the Barrier Highway are two road houses. The Emmdale Roadhouse is between Cobar and Wilcannia, and the Little Topar Roadhouse is further along the way to Broken Hill.

There is, however, one good option for a road trip stop on the drive from Cobar to Broken Hill. The snag is that it requires a significant detour.

The mining town of White Cliffs is north of Wilcannia, and is plenty of fun. Here, you can do a tour of the Red Earth opal mine, sleep in the Underground Motel and visit the Paroo-Darling National Park.

The White Cliffs detour bulks up the Cobar to Broken Hill journey time, however. You’re looking at a distance of 614km, and a driving time of six hours and 27 minutes.
