The drive from Nyngan to Bourke is a tedious old slog, alas. The Mitchell Highway passes through the tiny settlements of Girilambone, Coolabah and Byrock, none of which have anything to offer tourists.
Bourke, however, has a fair bit going for it. Options here include climbing Mount Oxley, the walks, rock art and wildflowers of Gundabooka National Park and the outback life celebration that is the Back O’ Bourke Exhibition Centre.
