Katherine to Kununurra road trip: Distance, driving time & stops
Katherine to Kununurra drive attractions: Timber Creek
If you’re wanting more to choose from, then Timber Creek is about half way between Katherine and Kununurra. There are a few places to stay here, including the Timber Creek Hotel and Caravan Park, plus the Wirib Store and Tourism Park.
Timber Creek attractions worth a look include the Timber Creek Police Station Complex, which gives an insight into the historically poor treatment of Aboriginal Australians. There’s also the Gregory Tree, a sprawling boab tree that marks the camp of the North Australia Expedition led by Augustus Charles Gregory in 1855-56.
It was on this expedition that the boab was first described by European settlers. The expedition’s botanist, Ferdinand Von Mueller also gave the tree its Latin name – Adansonia gregorii.
The Gregory Tree is in the huge Gregory National Park, which you’ll need a 4WD vehicle to explore.
