Sydney to Uluru road trip guide: Distance, time & best stops
Sydney to Uluru drive: Wagga Wagga to Mildura
The Sydney to Wagga Wagga drive takes about five hours. And from Wagga Wagga to Mildura in Victoria, it’s another five hours and 49 minutes. There’s not a massive amount to see on the way, as the Sturt Highway passes relatively humdrum towns such as Darlington Point, Hay and Balranald.
The most interesting stop before the Sturt Highway meets the Murray River at Robinvale is Yanga National Park. Here, the hugely atmospheric Yanga Woolshed and Yanga Homestead are awash with the ghosts of the wool industry. It’s a great place to learn how Australia was grown on the sheep’s back.
Sydney to Uluru road trip itinerary: National parks around Mildura
Overnight stop Mildura has plenty going for it, with wineries and orchards all around. If you have time, it’s worth taking a tour to one of the nearby national parks. Murray Sunset National Park offers pink lakes and red kangaroos, while the Hattah Lakes in the Hattah-Kulkyne National Park are surrounded by wildlife.
Your Mildura checklist
- Find the best accommodation.
- Book a half day visit to the Trentham Estate Winery and Mildura Wetlands…
- … Or a nature-focused Hattah Lakes 4WD tour.
Top choice, however, should be the Mungo National Park, one of the most important historic sites in Australia. Here, beneath the waves of shifting dunes, bones have been unearthed that prove Aboriginal people have been in Australia for far longer than originally thought.
