It is not the only airport in the Red Centre, however. A surprising number of flights go into Yulara, next to the Ayers Rock Resort. Indeed, if all you want to do is see Uluru, you’re much better off taking a flight to Yulara. The drive from Alice Springs to Uluru takes around five hours.

Seven Mile Aerodrome in Connellan

But where is Alice Springs Airport exactly? Well, it’s about 13km south of central Alice Springs in the suburb of Connellan.

Alice Springs Airport was originally called the Seven Mile Aerodrome, and was built by the Department of Defence. During the Second World War, the Seven Mile Aerodrome played a critical role in manoeuvring troops and supplies around Australia.

In 1958, the Seven Mile Aerodrome officially became Alice Springs Airport. It is currently owned by Northern Territory Airports Pty, and has the IATA code of ASP. Interestingly, there’s also a large scale aircraft boneyard at Alice Springs. This is where unwanted and retired planes are stored when the airlines no longer want them.

Transport from Alice Springs Airport

It is easy to hire a car from Alice Springs Airport, and this is worth doing if you want to see the city and region properly. Alice Springs camel tours and the Alice Springs Desert Park are among the options.

Otherwise, Emu Run Experience runs an Alice Springs Airport shuttle bus into town, costing $18 one way. A taxi from Alice Springs Airport to Alice Springs itself should cost around $45.
