Alice Springs to Darwin railway line history

Taking the train from Alice Springs to Darwin has only recently become possible. There has been a rail connection between Adelaide and Alice Springs of some sort since 1929. But the link from Alice Springs to Darwin was only connected in 2004.

This transcontinental link from south to north instantly turned the Ghan – the train that runs from Adelaide to Darwin – into one of the world’s great rail journeys.

The Alice Springs to Darwin train is the Ghan – you just join it halfway through.
