Most flights to Australia involve a change of planes, but British Airways runs a flight from London Heathrow to Sydney, which touches down in Singapore along the way. Many travellers prefer to go straight through to Sydney, but there is an opportunity to break the journey with a couple of days in Singapore.

Free stopovers in Singapore?

But does British Airways offer free stopovers in Singapore, or does it cost significantly more to spend a few nights in Singapore before heading on to Australia?

Alas, unlike some other airlines and destinations, British Airways does not offer a free stopover option in Singapore. You can still stop there for a couple of days on the way to Australia, though – and it is one of the most attractive stopover options.

How much does a stopover in Singapore cost?

The extra cost of a stopover in Singapore will vary depending on the cost of the flight ticket and dates of travel.

For a dummy booking, we looked at the price of a return flight from London Heathrow to Sydney in low season – November. British Airways quoted £1,304 for an economy class return.

Then we used the multi-city booking tool to add two days in Singapore on the way to Sydney. The cheapest option here cost £1,564 – and that’s before you start adding on hotels.

Free Singapore transit tours

If you have a long layover in Singapore, of between 5.5 hours and 24 hours, there is another intriguing option. There are plenty of things to do on a Singapore layover, but most popular are the free transit tours.

There are four 2.5 hour tours to choose from. One focuses on the city sights, another on the Jewel, another on the Changi neighbourhood and the most recent addition to the roster is a heritage tour.

Further information on these free Singapore transit tours can be found on the Changi Airport website.
