Is Rockhampton in crocodile country?

Rockhampton is in Croc Country, which the Queensland Government’s Department of Environment and Science defines as north of the Boyne River in Gladstone. This means it is within the boundaries of the region where saltwater crocodiles live.

The crocodiles tend to be more prevalent further north, but there have been several crocodile sightings in Rockhampton over the last couple of decades.

Will I see crocodiles in Rockhampton?

While there might be crocodiles in Rockhampton, it is unlikely that most visitors will encounter one. Rockhampton is too urban, and while there’s a possibility of seeing one in the Fitzroy River, most people aren’t likely to be getting in the river with it.

Are crocodiles removed from Rockhampton?

The Queensland Crocodile Management Plan divides areas up into six zones. The majority of Rockhampton, including a significant stretch of the Fitzroy River, is in the targeted management zone.

This means that any crocodiles more than two metres in length, or seen behaving dangerously, are immediately targeted for removal.
