What is an Australian water dragon?

The Australian water dragon – Intellagama lesueurii – is an inquisitive reptile that lives along the east coast of Australia. Visitors are likely to encounter them near creeks and lakes.

The Australian water dragon is one of those strange creatures you’re likely to bump into while in Australia. It may not be as iconic as the kangaroo, koala or saltwater crocodile, but the Australian water dragon is common enough and inquisitive enough to put in an appearance.

Where to Australian water dragons live?

But what is an Australian water dragon? Well, it’s a species of reptile that’s divided into two subspecies – the eastern water dragon and Gippsland water dragon. Of these, the eastern water dragon is most common. They can be found most of the way along the east coast of Australia, usually near sources of water such as creeks and lakes.

Australian water dragons go under the Latin name of Intellagama lesueurii, but to most Australians, they’re just those weird-looking lizards that pop up in holiday spots such as Byron Bay.

How big are Australian water dragons?

The male Australian water dragon is generally larger than the female. They grow up to just over a metre in length, while the females grow to about 60cm long. To the untrained eye, they look a little like iguanas. The crest along the back of the head, running down towards the tail, is highly distinctive.

Australian water dragons usually eat insects and, occasionally, small rodents. They have absolutely no interest in humans, and will generally leave humans alone. The adult males might confidently strut near to humans, but as long as people leave them alone, the Australian water dragon poses no danger. Do something stupid like trying to catch one, however, and you might have sharp teeth and claws to contend with.
