The Cape Hillsborough caravan park in Queensland has recently been bought out by NRMA Parks and Resorts. This should bring big changes, and perhaps put Cape Hillsborough more prominently on the tourist map.

Where is Cape Hillsborough?

The Cape Hillsborough National Park in Queensland is a destination that should perhaps be better known than it is. This Queensland national park is 50km north-west of Mackay on the Whitsunday coast.

Mackay to Cape Hillsborough drive

The problem is that the best time to see these kangaroos and wallabies is at either sunrise or sunset.

Unless you want to drive 50km in the dark from Mackay, that means staying at Cape Hillsborough. And there’s only one accommodation option there.

Three great Mackay experiences to book in advance

  • (Highly recommended ) Whitsunday Islands boat cruise – with snorkelling and paddleboarding.
  • Cape Hillsborough sunrise tour – meet wallabies on the beach.
  • ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Finch Hatton Gorge waterfalls tour.

Cape Hillsborough caravan park: NRMA Parks and Resorts

The Cape Hillsborough Nature Tourist Park is blessed with a fabulous beachfront location, and it acts as a hub for fishing, kayaking and hikes in the national park.

Alas, the accommodation at the Cape Hillsborough Nature Tourist Park is tired and the facilities are not up to the standard you’d expect from some other Australian holiday parks.

This, however, is about to change. In late 2022, NRMA Parks and Resorts bought this Cape Hillsborough caravan park. It has a three year plan to transform it and bring it up to the standards of other parks in the 40 property empire.

Cape Hillsborough caravan parks: Rates for camping and cabins

Prices will probably change with the redevelopment, but for now accommodation at Cape Hillsborough costs from $35 for a powered site. There’s also an array of huts and cabins available. The rates on a four person Queenslander hut start at $117 per night, while six person family beach cabins cost from $225.

These prices were correct at time of writing but are obviously subject to change. For now, bookings should be made via the Cape Hillsborough Nature Tourist Park website.
