The drive from Port Lincoln to Coffin Bay takes you across the bottom of South Australia’s Eyre Peninsula. Port Lincoln is easily the biggest town in these parts, while Coffin Bay is essentially a village with a heavy focus on oyster farming.

The distance from Port Lincoln to Coffin Bay by road is 46km. The driving time is approximately 34 minutes.

The quickest route to Coffin Bay heads out of Port Lincoln along the New West Road, then up the Western Approach Road before joining the Flinders Highway.

The highway then goes past the Big Swamp wetlands and Coomunga Wines.

Shortly afterwards, you need to branch off down the Coffin Bay Road, then head through the Kellidie Bay Conservation Park.

You may wish to pull over at the Coffin Bay Lookout before entering the village.

Things to do in Coffin Bay: Oyster farm tours

For somewhere so small, Coffin Bay has a surprising amount going on. Top of the list of things to do in Coffin Bay, however, should be an oyster farm tour.

These tours, run by an oyster farmer, take you by boat to one of the oyster farms in the bay. You’ll get to eat oysters plucked fresh from the sea.

The tour then continues to the Brother Islands in search of dolphins and seals. This three hour tour costs $175 at time of writing, and can be booked online.

Coffin Bay restaurants and cafés

You can also visit the oyster sheds for some of the best oysters in the world at bargain prices.

But if you want a full meal, places to eat in Coffin Bay include Oyster HQ, the Beachcomber Café and the 1802 restaurant.

Coffin Bay accommodation

Accommodation in Coffin Bay comes mainly in the form of holiday lets. However, you can also try the Longbeach Apartments or the Discovery Coffin Bay holiday park.

Other attractions near Port Lincoln include the wildlife-heavy Glen-Forest Tourist Park, Whalers Way and koala hang-out Mikkira Station. The town is also the gateway to Lincoln National Park and the shark cage dives around the Neptune Islands.
