The small holiday town of Sceale Bay, South Australia, is based around a stunning 14.7km beach. Different sections of the beach are good for swimming, surfing and driving.

On the western coast of South Australia’s Eyre Peninsula, Sceale Bay is a tiny holiday town. It’s the sort of place you really have to know about and make an effort to get to. But many think the 14.7km beach is worth it.

Where is Sceale Bay?

Sceale Bay is 32km south of Streaky Bay, South Australia. Access is via the Sceale Bay Road, which is sealed. It’s just over half an hour’s drive west to the Flinders Highway in Mortana. The Murphy’s Haystacks rock formations are just before the highway junction.

Surfing at Sceale Bay Beach

Sceale Bay Beach stretches between the settlements of Sceale Bay and Yanerbie. It starts off facing north, then curves round to face west, before curving round again to face south.

Sometimes known as surfers beach, the best waves are in the west-facing section in the middle.

Those with a 4WD vehicle can drive along the beach to get there.

Can I swim at Sceale Bay?

If you prefer swimming to surfing, then the southern end of the beach near the Sceale Bay township is much better.

Cape Blanche offers protection from the ocean, and there are reefs offshore. The water is usually calm here.
