Almonta Beach, South Australia

Almonta Beach, South Australia

Part of the Coffin Bay National Park, Almonta Beach on South Australia’s Eyre Peninsula offers white sand, wildlife and safe snorkelling.

Almonta Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in South Australia. It’s part of Coffin Bay National Park on the Eyre Peninsula although it’s not actually on Coffin Bay itself.

This is an ocean beach, although it doesn’t attract especially big surf. Indeed, at low tide, a lagoon forms and rock pools become exposed. Almonta Beach, despite facing the Southern Ocean, is a better place for snorkelling than surfing.

Port Lincoln experiences to book in advance

Wildlife at Almonta Beach, Coffin Bay National Park

You can see plenty of sea life, but some of the nature is out of the water. Almonta Beach is a notoriously good spot for seeing goannas, kangaroos and especially emus. You might also spot geese hanging out here, too. Meanwhile, dolphins are fairly regular visitors just offshore.

Even if you don’t see any animals, however, Almonta Beach is an absolute stunner. The sand is dazzlingly white, and the shallows tend to be crystal clear. There’s a tropical island paradise vibe about it, even though this Eyre Peninsula beach is not on an island and not in the tropics.

Do I need a 4WD for Almonta Beach, South Australia?

Almonta Beach may be at the south-western corner of Coffin Bay, but it is easily accessible. The road leading to it is sealed, and suitable for conventional vehicles. It’s about an hour’s drive from Port Lincoln, although you may wish to stop at the famous Coffin Bay oyster sheds along the way.

There is no camping available at Almonta Beach. The nearest Coffin Bay campground is at Yangie Bay.

Other Eyre Peninsula beaches worth visiting include Greenly Beach on the west coast and Perlubie Beach near Streaky Bay and Memory Cove in Lincoln National Park.
