Monkey Mia entry fee: Cost and accommodation

Monkey Mia entry fee: Cost and accommodation

Don’t be surprised by the extra Monkey Mia entry fee when checking into your Monkey Mia accommodation in Western Australia’s Shark Bay. The $15 fee goes towards conservation of the dolphins.

Largely due to the popularity of the wild dolphin-feeding sessions, Monkey Mia in Western Australia’s Shark Bay region has become a sought-after place to stay. However, it is important to know that there is only one place to stay in Monkey Mia – the RAC Monkey Mia Dolphin Resort. During peak periods, the Monkey Mia Resort sells out. You are strongly advised to book your stay in advance.

Why does the Monkey Mia accommodation charge an extra fee?

However, many guests at the resort are surprised to learn that they have to pay an extra fee when they arrive.

This extra fee is not charged by the resort itself. The RAC Monkey Mia Dolphin Resort is inside the Monkey Mia Conservation Reserve, and the fee is for entry to the reserve. There’s no way of avoiding this extra fee, and it is not wrapped into the cost of the accommodation.

Again, book your Monkey Mia accommodation in advance.

What is the Monkey Mia entry fee for?

The Monkey Mia entry fee is collected on arrival, and charged by the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions.

It is paid direct to the DBCA, and goes towards the management, welfare and research of the Monkey Mia dolphins.

What does the Monkey Mia entry fee cost?

For most visitors, the Monkey Mia reserve entry fee is charged by the carload, rather than per person. It’s $15 per car, or $8 for concessions.

If coming in a larger vehicle, with 12 or more passengers, the fee is charged on a per-person rate. In this case, it costs $7.

The Perth to Monkey Mia drive takes just under nine hours, although there are now direct flights to Shark Bay Airport.
