Can I do a beach skydive in Sydney?

You can’t do a beach skydive in Sydney, but you can skydive onto the beach in Wollongong, 90km to the south. Skydive Australia operates tandem skydives from 15,000ft.

Doing a tandem skydive is one of the great adrenalin experiences in Australia, and it’s an activity available in several destinations. These include Cairns in far north Queensland and Rottnest Island, a short ferry ride from Perth.

The idea is pretty simple. You take a short scenic flight in a small plane, then jump out strapped to someone who – hopefully – has had plenty of practice.

Two phases of a Sydney beach skydive

There are two phases to the parachute jump. First comes the freefall, and the higher you jump from, the more exhilarating this is. It’s pure G Force as you tumble through the sky, cheeks flapping.

Then, once the parachute is opened, the skydive becomes an altogether different experience. At this point, it’s all about taking in the scenery, as you float slowly to earth.

Why do a beach skydive?

It’s this second part of the journey that makes doing a skydive onto a beach more satisfying. When you know you’re landing on a beach, there’s a big golden target to aim for. There’s also the extra bubble of excitement that comes from being so close to the crashing ocean.

Sydney has several excellent beaches – Bondi and Bronte are amongst the favourites, and the harbour beaches are hugely underrated. But it’s not possible to do a beach skydive on to any of them.

Beach skydive on to North Wollongong Beach?

It’s not possible to do a beach skydive in Sydney, but it is possible to do one NEAR Sydney. Skydive Australia offers the option in Wollongong, 90km to the south. It takes about 90 minutes to drive to the drop zone office from Sydney CBD, and under normal, non-Covid circumstances, free shuttle bus transfers are offered.

The Wollongong beach skydives land on North Wollongong beach. But that’s after up to 60 seconds of freefall, and floating under canopy for five to seven minutes. On the way down, there are views of Wollongong, the Royal National Park and the Illawarra Escarpment. Sometimes skydivers even spot whales and dolphins on the way.

A beach skydive from 15,000ft with Skydive Australia’s Wollongong operation costs from $379. Other beaches in Wollongong include surfer-friendly Windang Beach.
