There are plenty of things to do in Byron Bay, which has become one of Australia’s most popular holiday towns. But Byron, eight hours drive north of Sydney or two hours south of Brisbane, started out as a surf town. And surfing is still a big part of this NSW North Coast hang-out’s identity.

If you can do just one thing in Byron Bay, make it kayaking with dolphins. The scenery’s beautiful, and you can get much closer to the dolphins than you would on a boat tour. BOOK HERE.

One major reason for Byron Bay being so popular with surfers is that it has several beaches – such as Belongil Beach and Tallow Beach – facing in different directions. This means that whichever direction the wind is coming from, there’s usually somewhere that’s good to surf. It’s one of the most popular places in Australia to take surfing lessons, along with Noosa in Queensland, Bondi Beach in Sydney and Torquay on the Great Ocean Road.

Byron Bay surfing lessons for beginners

Unsurprisingly, given the number of backpackers in Byron Bay, there are several Byron Bay surf schools. Most will pick the best beach depending on conditions for beginner surfing lessons.

One Byron Bay surf lesson, of course, is not going to turn you into a great surfer. This is why most surf schools offer longer packages. The Byron Bay Surf School is among them, as is Black Dog Surfing. The latter runs three day surfing lesson packages, with 3.5 hours each day, for $165. By the end of the third lesson, you should be riding and turning on the waves.

Byron Bay surf camps

If you’re really wanting to learn to surf properly, the best option is probably a multi-day surf camp. Surf board and bike hire is included, as is one surfing lesson on Byron Bay’s beaches per day and either breakfast or lunch.

If you don’t fancy surfing lessons in Byron Bay, then other fun experiences in this part of regional Australia include night vision wildlife walks in the Nightcap National Park and kayaking with dolphins on a special tour.
