The much-loved Adelaide Oval cricket ground was mostly replaced in a major redevelopment that finished in 2014. Before then, it was seen as one of the prettiest cricket grounds in the world, but it wasn’t exactly a money-spinner like Melbourne‘s MCG. Adelaide needed extra capacity.

The Adelaide Oval’s revamp turned it, indisputably, into a large modern stadium. However, certain heritage features had to stay. These included the Moreton Bay fig trees, grass bank and wooden, manually-operated scoreboard.

Capacity of Adelaide Oval

These historic elements meld into a stadium design that has won over stalwart old timers surprisingly quickly. The new 53,500 capacity stadium has been met with grudging respect. It is now home to the Adelaide Crows and Port Adelaide Australian Rules football teams, and hosts international cricket matches. Many of the latter are day-night affairs, held under floodlights.

Adelaide Oval walking tours have long been available at the stadium, and you can stay at the Adelaide Oval Hotel. But the most exciting new addition to the Adelaide Oval tour roster, however, is the Roofclimb. For the uninitiated, this adventurous walking tour allow you to climb the Adelaide Oval. It is a little like Sydney’s Bridgeclimb. Participants start by kitting themselves out in jump suits. They’re then harnessed up, and attached to wires that run all over the Oval’s scallop-shaped roofs.

How does the Adelaide Oval RoofClimb work?

Like the Bridgeclimb, the Roofclimb is not as scary as many might imagine. There’s very little climbing involved, and the Adelaide Oval RoofClimb is more like a walk over the rooftops. Be warned – there are a couple of moments where looking down between your feet might induce a gulp. But for all but the biggest acrophobes, the Roofclimb is fun, rather than terrifying.

From up top, Adelaide Oval RoofClimb participants get to see the drop-in pitches grown to the side and the giant mowers cutting the grass. Best of all, there’s a prime bird’s eye view of the pitch.

A few secret seats hide on the roof of the Riverside Stand. Climb the Adelaide Oval on match day, and you get to watch 10 overs of cricket or a quarter of Australian Rules Football up there. That’s from an even better position than the TV cameramen have.
