Geikie Gorge, WA: Fitzroy River boat tours, walks & location

Geikie Gorge near Fitzroy Crossing, Western Australia, offers a series of walks amid ancient limestone reefs. But the hour-long Geikie Gorge boat cruise is the highlight of a visit.

What is Geikie Gorge?

Geikie Gorge is a gorge cut by the Fitzroy River in Western Australia. 250 million years ago, it was limestone barrier reef. It is now the centrepiece of the Danggu Geikie Gorge National Park, with the gorge walls rising 30 metres above the river.

Where is Geikie Gorge?

Geikie Gorge is in the Kimberley region of Western Australia. It is around 20km north-east of Fitzroy Crossing, or 390km from Broome. The road is accessible in a conventional vehicle.

You can tag a visit on to the Broome to Fitzroy Crossing leg of the drive across the Kimberley from Broome to Kununurra – or further, from Broome to Darwin.

Geikie Gorge walks

There are a series of walks at Geikie Gorge, none of them especially taxing. The 1.2km return Bun.gu Trail heads to a sandbar, with a series of signs offering the local Bunubu people’s knowledge of plants, animals and the landscape.

The Jarrambayah Trail is longer – about 4.4km return – and takes in limestone reef outcrops on the way to the west wall of the gorge. The 1.6km Balili Rarrgi Trail branches off it and, again, showcases remnants of the ancient reef.

Geikie Gorge boat tours

Despite all these Geikie Gorge walks, the best way to visit this Kimberley National Park is on a boat tour. Geikie Gorge cruises run from May to October.

The hour-long Geikie Gorge boat tours cost $50, and there’s a special emphasis on the wildlife you can see on the way. Freshwater crocodiles are a common site, as are sea eagles and flying foxes.
