Things to do in Deepdene, WA: Jewel Cave tour price

Jewel Cave in Deepdene can only be visited as part of an hour-long guided tour. These cave tours cost $22.50 and should be booked in advance. It’s not an especially strenuous tour, but be aware that there are 250 steps spread out between the boardwalks. You have to go back up them on the way out.

Highlights inside the cave include crystal formations that have grown over thousands of years. The cave roof has webs of decorations, some looking like vines and some looking like cobwebs. The single most impressive cave decoration in Deepdene, however, is a giant, straw-like stalactite.

Tasmanian Tigers in Jewel Cave, Deepdene

The highlight of the Jewel Cave tour, however, is hearing of the Tasmanian Tigers that fell into the cave. Tasmanian Tigers – more correctly known as thylacines – have long been extinct on the Australian mainland and recently went extinct in Tasmania. A skeleton of one of these Thylacines is on display at the Cave Centre.

Whilst in Deepdene, you might as well take on the self-guided Karri Walk above ground. The Karri Walk passes through enormous trees in the south-western forests.

Getting to Deepdene, Western Australia

Jewel Cave is an eight minute drive north-west of Augusta in south-western WA. The drive from Margaret River (the town) takes just over half an hour. Ngigli Cave (BOOK HERE) and Mammoth Cave (BOOK HERE) are the other main options for cave completists.

For a more indulgent take on the region, try Cullen Wines, Vasse Felix, the Bootleg Brewery and Black Brewing Co in Wilyabrup. Other major wineries include Xanadu, Leeuwin Estate and Voyager Estate, which you can see on a Margaret River tour. And, for something sweeter, there’s always the Margaret River Chocolate Company in Metricup.
