Myrtle Gully Falls: Hobart’s favourite waterfall walk

Myrtle Gully Falls: Hobart’s favourite waterfall walk

On Mount Wellington, Myrtle Gully Falls is close to Hobart and a relatively easy walk down the Myrtle Gully Track. You can stop at Secret Falls along the way.

Myrtle Gully Falls is an undeniably pretty Tasmanian waterfall. There are more impressive options in the state, but what makes Myrtle Gully Falls so appealing is its proximity to the Tasmanian capital, Hobart.

This Hobart waterfall can be found on the lower slopes of kunanyi/ Mount Wellington. The trailhead is about 6.5km south-east of Hobart.

How to get to Myrtle Gully Falls

The nearest car park to Myrtle Gully Falls is at the end of Old Farm Road behind the former Cascade Brewery. You need to walk briefly along the Old Farm Track before joining the Myrtle Gully Track.

The full Myrtle Gully Falls walk from the car park is about 550 metres one way. If you set off from behind the former brewery, going along the Cascade Track from the start, it’s a more engaging 2.5km one way walk.

The Myrtle Gully track and Secret Falls

It’s steadily uphill, but without ever getting too much like hard walk. The Myrtle Gully Track goes through fairly dense forest, and stops at a second waterfall – Secret Falls – about 50 metres before reaching Myrtle Gully Falls.

It’s not exactly a secret waterfall – this walk is a popular one, and there’s plenty of footfall on anything resembling a nice day.

Myrtle Gully Falls is more of a cascade than a single waterfall. The largest single drop is about four metres tall. It plunges over a series of rock ledges into a forest-surrounded pool at the bottom.
