Population of Tasmania: How many live in Australia’s smallest state?

The population of Tasmania, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, is 540,800. This makes the Tasmanian population slightly smaller than that of Cape Verde, and slightly bigger than that of Malta.

The population of Tasmania is quite small by Australian standards, let alone global standards. Australia’s smallest state is about the size of Sri Lanka, but doesn’t have nearly as many people. Most of the state is rural, with significant wilderness areas where essentially no-one lives.

Tasmania population

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the population of Tasmania is 540,800. This is according to a report released in March 2022, using Tasmania population figures for September 2021.

Effectively, Tasmania has the same population as a medium-sized city elsewhere in the world.

The Tasmanian population is certainly much smaller than that of many Australian cities. The populations of Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, Brisbane and the Gold Coast are all significantly bigger.

Population of Tasmania compared to countries

Tasmania isn’t a country. But if it was, it’d be low down the list of countries by population. The population of Tasmania is slightly lower than that of Cape Verde or Suriname, but slightly higher than that of Malta or Belize.

Most of Tasmania’s population lives in or around the island’s two main cities, Hobart and Launceston.
