The Tea Tree Lookout in the Munmorah State Conservation Area, Wybung, is one of the best places on the Central Coast to see migrating humpback whales.

What is the Tea Tree Lookout?

The Tea Tree Lookout in Wybung, New South Wales, is one of the highlights of the Munmorah State Conservation Area.

This Central Coast lookout is also a popular picnic area. There are free picnic tables and gas barbecues for visitors.

Where is the Tea Tree Lookout and Picnic Area?

The Tea Tree Lookout and Picnic Area are in the Munmorah State Conservation Area, which is at the northern end of the Central Coast region. This Wybung lookout overlooks Birdie Beach on the Budgewoi Peninsula.

It is a short drive away from Toukley, Budgewoi and Norah Head.

Surfers will often stop at the lookout before taking their board down to Birdie Beach. This lookout is good place for assessing the surf conditions, and it’s an easy walk down the boardwalk to the beach.

Birdie Beach walk from the Tea Tree Lookout

There is a car park at the Tea Tree Lookout, but you may prefer to park at the Birdie Beach car park instead. The walk from Birdie Beach to the Tea Tree Lookout is about 500 metres long.

Aside from the picnic area, the main reason to visit the Tea Tree Lookout is land-based whale-watching. During the winter months, the elevated position makes this Munmorah State Conservation Area lookout a tremendous place to watch migrating humpback whales.

Bring binoculars if you want to see the whales, however.

Tea Tree Lookout entry fee

There is an entry charge to enter the Munmorah State Conservation Area in Wybung, and this applies even if you just want to take a quick photo from the Tea Tree Lookout.

The entry charge is $8 per vehicle per day.

The Munmorah State Conservation Area is open from 05.30 to 21.00 for most of the year, although between May and the September school holidays, it closes at 19.00.
