Gewurzhaus is unlikely to be the most practical shop in Australia for visitors. If useful’s what you’re after, hunt down your local Strandbags for luggage and Thirsty Camel for booze. But few shops in Australia smell as good, or look as colourful as Gewurzhaus.

The premise of the store is fairly simple. It sources single-origin spices, herbs, salts, peppers, teas and sugars from across the globe, and allows you to scoop out however much you want. It’s the presentation that’s so tempting. The goodies aren’t hidden away in pre-packaged boxes – you can delve in to your heart’s content.
Gewurzhaus in Australia also mills its own small-batch spice blends, and there are more than 100 to choose from.
The first Gewurzhaus opened on Lygon Street in Carlton, Melbourne, back in 2010. It was a family-inspired business, with the baking of great-grandmother Oma Rosa firmly in the minds of the founders when they set up shop.
The inspiration was the way care and love were put into the preparation of family meals, and having the right ingredients was a part of this.
The concept for the help-yourself spice store has clearly been successful, as the Gewurzhaus brand has spread across Australia.
Gewurzhaus locations in Australia
In Melbourne, the original Carlton store has been joined by a stall at the Queen Victoria Market and the South Melbourne Market. You’ll also find shops in the Block Arcade and Chadstone shopping centre.
There is also a regional Victorian stall, on the Maroondah Highway in Healesville. That’s where the Yarra Valley meets the Yarra Ranges.
There are also Gewurzhaus stores in Adelaide, Canberra and Sydney. The Adelaide outlet is in Adelaide Central Market and the Canberra store is in the Canberra Centre mall.
The Sydney stores, meanwhile, are on Oxford Street in Bondi Junction, the Strand Arcade in Sydney CBD and Castle Towers in Castle Hill.
