Hanuman Darwin: Menu, restaurant prices & what type of food is it?

Asian restaurant Hanuman Darwin is one of the best places to eat in the Northern Territory of Australia. The Hanuman menu combines Indian, Thai and Malay influences.

Hanuman Darwin is perhaps the most revered restaurant in the Northern Territory capital. Since opening in 1992, Hanuman Darwin has created a strong reputation for serving high quality pan-Asian cuisine.

This Darwin restaurant has an indoor section, which is more edgily stylish and suited to date nights, plus a more laid-back outdoor section.

Indian food at Hanuman Darwin

Hanuman Darwin is perhaps most famous for its Indian dishes. The signature dish is a butter chicken pepped up with cardamom and fenugreek. However, this isn’t a straight down the line Indian restaurant.

For example, another Hanuman speciality is the oysters. These are flavoured with lemongrass, sweet basil, ginger, chilli and coriander.

If that sounds more Thai than Indian, you’d be correct, as there are plenty of Thai influences on the Hanuman menu. The same applies to Malay flavours. A major part of what makes Hanuman special is that it mixes flavours from different cuisines to provide something that doesn’t exclusively belong to one particular place.

There are a few Australian influences, too, with locally-caught prawns and barramundi also on the Hanuman menu.

Prices at Hanuman are fairly reasonable, given that it’s still one of the hottest restaurants in Darwin after 30 years. Most mains come in at under the $30 mark, although you can splash out or more expensive dishes such as the Thai crispy whole fish.
