Hispanic Mechanic in Frewville, South Australia, is ostensibly a Latin American restaurant. But this Adelaide restaurant really doesn’t stick to the script. If blending together Mexican and Korean flavours works, then why not try it?

First and foremost, Hispanic Mechanic is a fun place to eat. The big courtyard has a South American vibe and cartoonish characters chase each other around the white-tiled walls.

The Hispanic Mechanic menu is consistently inventive. This Frewville restaurant majors in tacos, but there are some unusual flavour combinations in them.

The belly and beans taco, for example, comes with seared pork belly, black bean salsa and shredded lettuce. But it also has radish and pear-habanero mayonesa.

There’s also a Korean-inspired taco at this Adelaide Latin American restaurant. It comes with Korean fried cauliflower, wasabi mayonesa, pickled vegetables, gochujang, sesame seeds, cilantro and daikon kimchi.

The most appealing dishes on the Hispanic Mechanic menu, however, are in the Platos Grandes section. The ‘duck dirty duck’ involves crispy slow-cooked duck leg, with pulled duck rice, pickled jalapeno and cilantro pesto. There’s also a Brazilian-style feijoada and an Ecuadorian chicken stew.

There’s also a commendably large selection of vegan food at this Frewville restaurant. Many of the tastiest-sounding dishes are deliberately kept meat-free.

The drinks menu at Hispanic Mechanic has a heavy focus on tequilas and mescals, but some other spirits are used in the cocktails. Latin American classics include the pina colada, mojito and caiprinha and pisco sour.

The wines, meanwhile, are a mix of South American and South Australian. Drops from Argentina and Chile mingle with those from the Adelaide Hills, Coonawarra, McLaren Vale and Barossa Valley.
