Naked For Satan, Melbourne: The best Brunswick Street bar?

Naked For Satan, Melbourne: The best Brunswick Street bar?

Naked For Satan is one of the most popular bars in the Fitzroy neighbourhood of Melbourne. This Fitzroy rooftop bar’s infused vodka collection makes it stand out from the crowd.

How did Naked For Satan get its name?

As names for bars go, you have to admit that Naked For Satan in Melbourne is fairly eye-catching. The name of this Brunswick Street bar comes from Russian immigrant Leon Satanovich, who escaped the pogroms in his birth country in 1928. His name was quickly truncated to Satan, and he started illicitly producing vodka.

It got so hot by the stills in the Melbourne summer that Satanovich would strip down to virtually nothing. Satan’s moonshine business became popular with the locals of the Fitzroy neighbourhood. The distiller being in his underpants didn’t put anyone off. “Let’s go naked for Satan” became the pass phrase for anyone wanting to come in and drink the unlicenced vodka.
